WHEREAS, the 2016 California Democratic Party platform states, “California Democrats believe that health care is a human right not a privilege. We recognize the health and well-being of Californians cannot continue to be based on arbitrary private and public financial decisions and therefore advocates legislation to create and implement a publicly funded (single-payer), privately delivered, fiscally tractable, affordable, comprehensive, secure, high-quality, efficient, and sustainable health care system for all Californians,” and the California Democratic Party has been on record for over a decade in support of a single-payer system to guarantee universal healthcare for all in California; and
WHEREAS, there is overwhelming support in the base of the Democratic Party with 81% of democrats nationally supporting a Medicare for All like system and studies have shown billions will be saved by moving to such a system with the last study in California showing it would save $344 billion in healthcare costs over 10 years – $44 billion would be saved by the State of California; and
WHEREAS, we must protect, improve upon and expand the healthcare gains made under the Affordable Care Act that are now under attack as the GOP takes steps to dismantle the ACA – which means $20 billion in federal funds to California are threatened, jobs will be lost, the state budget along with other essential public services are at risk, and millions will find healthcare more unaffordable and inaccessible;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Humboldt Progressive Democrats recognizes that California must lead the way nationally to establish healthcare as a human right and that healthcare must be guaranteed to all and strongly supports the passage of an enhanced Medicare for All like single payer healthcare program which will provide comprehensive, secure, sustainable, and quality healthcare for all Californians;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Humboldt Progressive Democrats transmits this resolution to the California Democratic Party, Democrats in the California Congressional delegation, and to all Democratic members of the California legislature.
